AI for Microsoft Word
AI for Microsoft Word, no Copilot licence needed
Use AI in Microsoft Word on Windows and Mac without a Copilot licence. KeyShift rewrites paragraphs, fixes grammar, summarizes and translates selected text in place. Free plan, your own key on Pro.
Word is still where reports, proposals, theses and contracts get written. Copilot in Word is impressive and, for many people, not available: it needs a licence their company or university has not bought.
KeyShift works in Word on Windows and macOS with one shortcut on any selection. Rewrite a paragraph, fix the grammar of a chapter, summarize a section into an abstract, translate a page. The result replaces the selection; formatting of the surrounding document is untouched.
What you can do with KeyShift in Microsoft Word
A paragraph that says the right thing badly.
Do: Select it, press Ctrl+Shift+A, choose Rephrase, or type an instruction like "clearer, active voice".
Get: The paragraph rewritten in place.
A 20-page report needs an executive summary.
Do: Select the body, choose Summarize, then paste at the top.
Get: A summary you edit rather than write.
A contract clause to translate for a partner.
Do: Select the clause, choose Translate to Italian, formal.
Get: The translation, in the register a lawyer expects.
A scanned PDF you need to quote.
Do: Press Ctrl+Shift+O and drag over the passage on screen.
Get: The text, ready to paste into Word.
What Word's own AI covers
Microsoft 365 Copilot drafts and rewrites inside Word on licensed accounts, and Editor checks spelling and grammar. KeyShift works on any Word licence, including the one-time purchase versions, and uses the same shortcut in Outlook, Teams and your browser.
How KeyShift works, in any app
- Quick Actions: select text, press Ctrl+Shift+A (⌘⇧A on Mac), pick an action. The result replaces the selection.
- The typed trigger: write normally, add keyshift plus your instruction, press space twice. No selection, no shortcut.
- Voice (Ctrl+Shift+M), text from screen (Ctrl+Shift+O) and clipboard history (Ctrl+Shift+V) for the text you do not have yet.
- Undo any replacement with Ctrl+Shift+Z, up to 20 steps.
Windows 10 and later, macOS 11 and later, and Android. See the getting started guide.
Tips for Microsoft Word
- Select whole paragraphs, not half sentences, so the rewrite reads as one piece.
- Track Changes stays on if you use it: the replacement shows as an edit you can accept or reject.
- For long sections, run the action chunk by chunk; the result is easier to review.
Questions people ask
Does it keep my formatting?
The replaced text takes the formatting of the selection start. Headings, lists and the rest of the document are untouched.
Does it work in Word Online and Google Docs?
Yes. Any text field in the browser or on the desktop.
Is it safe for confidential documents?
Only the selected text is sent, for that action, and it is not used for training. On Pro you can use your own key or a local model through Ollama so text never leaves your machine.
