QuillBot alternative

A QuillBot alternative that rewrites in the app you are already in

A QuillBot alternative that paraphrases, shortens and fixes text right where you write it. No paste box, no word limits per run, works in any app on Windows and Mac. Free plan.

QuillBot is a paraphrasing box: paste text, pick a mode, read the new version, copy it out. For students rewording a paragraph, that is what they need.

KeyShift puts the same rewriting under one shortcut in every app. Select the paragraph in Word, Google Docs or the email you are drafting, pick Rephrase or write your own instruction, and the new version is typed back in place. Your words, your tone, no paste box.

What QuillBot is built around

  • A web paraphraser with named modes (fluent, formal, simple, and so on) and a browser extension that mirrors it.
  • Per-run word limits on the free plan.
  • Paraphrasing, grammar and summarizing as separate tools in the same site.

What KeyShift does instead

  • Rewrite in place. Select text, press Ctrl+Shift+A, pick Rephrase, Make professional, Make casual, Shorten or Expand. The result replaces the original; Ctrl+Shift+Z brings it back.
  • Instructions instead of modes. Type keyshift rewrite this for a 10-year-old, then space twice. Any instruction you can write is a mode.
  • No separate tools. Grammar, summarizing, translation and replies sit in the same list as the rewrite.
  • Custom actions for the rewrites you repeat ("academic tone, keep citations untouched"), each with its own hotkey.
  • Works everywhere: Word, Docs, Notion, Overleaf in the browser, your LMS, your email.

  • The typed trigger: write normally, add keyshift plus your instruction, press space twice. No selection, no shortcut.
  • Voice (Ctrl+Shift+M), text from screen (Ctrl+Shift+O) and clipboard history (Ctrl+Shift+V) for the text you do not have yet.
  • Undo any replacement with Ctrl+Shift+Z, up to 20 steps.
