AI for Slack
AI writing assistant for Slack
Use AI in Slack without leaving the message box. KeyShift fixes grammar, changes tone, translates and summarizes threads with one shortcut, in the Slack desktop app or browser, on Windows and Mac. Free plan.
Slack messages are short, fast and public to the whole channel. A typo in a thread with fifty people stings, and a blunt reply to a colleague in another time zone lands worse than you meant it.
KeyShift sits under the message box. Finish typing, press one shortcut or type the trigger, and the message is fixed, softened, shortened or translated before you hit Enter. It works in the Slack desktop app and in Slack in the browser, on Windows and macOS.
What you can do with KeyShift in Slack
You typed a reply fast and it reads harsh.
Do: Type keyshift make this friendlier at the end and press space twice.
Get: The message is rewritten in place, trigger words gone, and you press Enter.
A 40-message thread landed while you were in a meeting.
Do: Select the thread text, press Ctrl+Shift+A, choose Summarize.
Get: Three bullet points of what was decided and what is still open.
A teammate writes in Portuguese and you reply in English.
Do: Turn on Live translate to Portuguese in Settings, type in English, press space twice.
Get: Every line is sent in Portuguese; they read it as if you wrote it.
You have to announce a change to the whole company.
Do: Dictate the rough version with Ctrl+Shift+M, then select it and pick Make professional.
Get: A clean announcement in your voice, in half the time.
What Slack's own AI covers
Slack AI, on the paid add-on, summarizes channels and threads and searches your workspace. It does not rewrite the message you are typing, change its tone or translate it. KeyShift covers that part and works on every Slack plan, including free workspaces.
How KeyShift works, in any app
- Quick Actions: select text, press Ctrl+Shift+A (⌘⇧A on Mac), pick an action. The result replaces the selection.
- The typed trigger: write normally, add keyshift plus your instruction, press space twice. No selection, no shortcut.
- Voice (Ctrl+Shift+M), text from screen (Ctrl+Shift+O) and clipboard history (Ctrl+Shift+V) for the text you do not have yet.
- Undo any replacement with Ctrl+Shift+Z, up to 20 steps.
Windows 10 and later, macOS 11 and later, and Android. See the getting started guide.
Tips for Slack
- Slack sends on Enter. Use the typed trigger with space twice, not Enter, and the rewrite happens before anything is sent.
- For code blocks, select only the prose around them. KeyShift leaves what you did not select alone.
- Save a custom action called Standup that turns your rough notes into the three-line format your team uses, with its own hotkey (Pro).
Questions people ask
Does KeyShift work in the Slack desktop app or only in the browser?
Both. KeyShift works at the operating-system level, so the Slack app on Windows and macOS is covered without any Slack integration or admin approval.
Does my Slack admin have to approve anything?
No. KeyShift is not a Slack app; it only acts on the text in your message box, like your keyboard does.
Can it summarize a channel I have not read?
Select the messages you want summarized (or copy them and use the clipboard history) and run Summarize. Slack AI does whole-channel recaps; KeyShift works on what you select.
