AI for VS Code

AI for the words in VS Code

Use AI on the words in VS Code: commit messages, code comments, READMEs, PR descriptions and error messages. KeyShift rewrites and translates selected text in place, with your own key on Pro. Windows and Mac.

Copilot writes the code. Somebody still has to write the commit message, the comment that explains why, the README section, the PR description and the error text a user will read at 2 a.m.

KeyShift works on selected text in VS Code and in the GitHub page in your browser. Select the comment, press one shortcut, pick Fix grammar or Make clearer. Type a commit message, add keyshift conventional commit style, press space twice. It never touches code you did not select.

What Copilot in VS Code covers

GitHub Copilot writes and explains code and can draft commit messages in the Source Control view. It is built for code. KeyShift is built for prose, works in every editor and on every web page, and on Pro runs on your own key or a local model.

How KeyShift works, in any app

  • Quick Actions: select text, press Ctrl+Shift+A (⌘⇧A on Mac), pick an action. The result replaces the selection.
  • The typed trigger: write normally, add keyshift plus your instruction, press space twice. No selection, no shortcut.
  • Voice (Ctrl+Shift+M), text from screen (Ctrl+Shift+O) and clipboard history (Ctrl+Shift+V) for the text you do not have yet.
  • Undo any replacement with Ctrl+Shift+Z, up to 20 steps.

Windows 10 and later, macOS 11 and later, and Android. See the getting started guide.

Tips for VS Code

  • Select only the comment or string, never the surrounding code. KeyShift replaces exactly the selection.
  • Ctrl+Shift+A may collide with a VS Code binding on your setup; change KeyShift's shortcut in Settings if so.
  • For localized strings, select the English and choose Translate; paste into the locale file.

Questions people ask

Will it change my code?

Only the text you select. If you select a code block by mistake, Ctrl+Shift+Z undoes it.

Can I use a local model so code comments never leave my machine?

Yes, on Pro, through Ollama.

Does it work in JetBrains IDEs, Cursor and Zed?

Yes. Any editor with a text field, on Windows and macOS.
